Do You Regret Not Learning About Money as a Child? You're Not Alone.

Regret not learning about money as a child?A Common Regret, A Clear Opportunity

When I was in the financial services industry, I discovered something that surprised me, but in time, became a recurring theme.

Many adults wished someone had taught them how to manage money when they were young.

It’s a frustration I still hear from people to this day. And it's one of the key reasons I started my journey into early-age financial literacy education.

Think about it. We teach kids the ABCs, basic math, how to read and write, but we do little to intentionally teach them how to save and invest regularly, spend smart, or build other essential money habits.

When we don’t, we’re missing out on a golden opportunity to set kids up for lifelong success—success that includes wellness on every level: emotional, financial, and even relational.

And it’s more than a missed opportunity, it’s a risk. Imagine asking a child to swim in the ocean without first giving them swimming lessons. Yet that’s often what we do when it comes to money. We send children into the world with little preparation and, worse, with mindsets preconditioned to spend away their futures.

And the indoctrination—and its effects—start much earlier than many think, including educators and experts. At least, that’s what both research and common sense suggest. The “gimmes” are not accidental. They’re an alarm—a wake-up call for alert and in-tune parents that kids’ attitudes and feelings around money are already taking shape.

It’s a call to positive action—and an opportunity to initiate a child’s financial education journey, if it hasn’t already begun.
