In His Own Words
Growing up in South Africa, I saw what money was able to do and provide. My father worked incredibly hard. My siblings and I hardly got much facetime with him but we were always taken care of financially and never had to go without.
I would always find my father in his study or reading, 7 days a week. If he wasn’t there he would be on business trips around the world. But by his hard work, he provided for our family. For this I will always be truly grateful.

A First Money Memory
One of the first memories I had around money was how precious it is. I learned this by observing how careful my father would be in spending money.
If we needed anything new in the house, I would always think it took forever before he finally made a decision. He was patient and strategic like that, although I didn’t see that at the time.
Instant gratification was my game, but it wasn’t his.

Earning Money Dad's Way
He was also not one to dish out cash easily to spend on something he would consider a waste of time or resources.
Earning money was also not an easy task in our household. I remember, I asked my father if I could wash his car for some money. He would cautiously agree. Once I was done he gave me some of his loose change which I thought was unfair at the time. I had an expectation I was going to have some paper money come my way!
I realized then that earning money was not going to be easy. I really had to work for it.

A Precious Resource
It further solidified the fact that money is a precious resource I need to respect.
Saving and NOT spending my money on things that will not add value or provide a return in the future should be avoided or not be a primary focus.
I don’t always follow this standard but its something I am always reminded of and it does help me to curb excess spending.

Saving Leads to More Control
Later in life when I was in a position to save some money of my own, it helped me feel more in control.
It also allowed me to start focusing on what I wanted out of life and who I wanted to be.

Saving Gives Me Permission to Go For My Dreams
Money in the bank is not only important for unforeseen emergencies that could happen on some idle Tuesday; it also gives me permission to start going after what truly matters to me and those around me.
It gives me permission to go after my dreams.
