In Her Own Words
As the second oldest out of nine children coming from a family of immigrants, my parents didn’t discuss their finances with us. But they didn’t hide their discussions from us either.
I still have vivid memories of them counting cash in their bedroom with the door wide-open and filing the monies into separate envelopes for each bill. Whenever they had heated discussions, it was primarily about living paycheck-to-paycheck and not having enough emergency savings.

Today, these are the two money matters I still see families struggling with, including mine.
In the summer of 2019, my sister-in-law shared the heart-wrenching news she was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. No one in the family has a history of cancer and she had no previous health issues, so this was certainly extra hard for us to accept.

The most important money habit. Saving!
At that time, my oldest son was five years old and we let him sit in on the family discussion. I didn’t think he understood what was going on. However, midway on the drive home he asked me, did she get hurt or did she get sick? How many days will it take for her to get better? Who’s going to take care of my cousins?
At this point, I was very emotional and replied back, mom needs a quiet moment.
Once we got home, I decided to tell him his aunt is very sick, she won’t be getting better and it will only get worse from here on.

In July of 2021, we celebrated her final birthday. She passed two weeks later.
It was devastating to discover at some point during her year-long health crisis and resulting forced unemployment her savings was depleted. So, I offered to help the family setup a GoFundMe. With great gratitude to all of our contributors, we met our goal and we were able to send her off with a proper funeral.
As I write this message, it has been close to three months since her departure. My son is now seven years old and he is back to school in-person, for the first time since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Covid-19 pandemic in March of 2020.

My sister-in-law’s life story has taught our entire family, including my son, a huge lesson on how impacting an unexpected health tragedy can be to a family’s lifestyle.
I recognize how hard it can be to save money for so many of us. But prioritizing emergency savings is essential and critical for a variety of reasons. Building and protecting your loved ones futures might be the most important.
