In Her Own Words

I witnessed entrepreneurship as a child because my dad was a business owner. I vividly remember my dad writing on his notepad, doing math, and figuring things out for his business.

I enjoyed helping at his store in any way I could, like talking to people coming in and working at the cash register. At some point I must’ve thought “I can do this too” because before I was 10, I had my own version of a lemonade stand.

I loved doing crafts, so I asked my mom to take me to a craft store to buy materials to make jewelry. I made earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, and sold them to my neighbors. When I was 13, I decided to sell lollipops and chocolates to my friends.

My Mom Encouraged Me to Save and Give

I was also good at saving money.

Whenever my parents gave me money to buy food in school, or to go out with my friends I was mindful of how much money I had received and always made it a goal to not spend it all.

My mom encouraged me to save and to share, so I always gave away 10% of what I received. I decided to open a savings account to put away the rest.

Early Money Habits Pay Off

Now that I'm a business owner, married, and have 2 kids, I see how those experiences helped me develop positive money habits.

I understood that saving and spending mindfully was just as important as making money.

I knew that losing or spending was so much easier than getting paid, so I needed to hold myself accountable with that cycle.

A Parents Role Is Important

I’ve also realized that we have such an important role as parents. Not talking about money doesn’t mean that our kids are not learning.

In fact, our past money stories affect how we relate to money even now as adults. Therefore, it’s necessary that we address those for our benefit, but also for the sake of what our kids are learning from us.

Kids Are Always Learning

My goal is for my kids to learn that money is a resource, rather than something "good" or "bad", and it's up to us how we manage it.

Of course, this is easier said than done. It takes being intentional and resourceful because they see us working, they see us buying things, and they hear what we say about money.

It's a learning experience for me as well, that's for sure!
