Moms, Dads - Have the Talk
Moms, Dads - Have you had this talk with your kids yet? Not the birds. Not the bees. The money talk?
Studies indicate it can be harder for parents to talk to kids about money than sex. The dad and daughter video above demonstrates it does not have to be. In fact, talking to kids about money can be as easy as 1, 2, 3. Here is how to do it.
Step 1. Start With a Story
The talk can start with a story like Sammy's Big Dream.
Step 2. Ask a Few Questions
Then pose a few questions to your child.
Focus first on what your child wants. Then follow with things they need to do to get what they want.
Ask them questions like:
-What's your big dream - what do you want, really want?
-What are you willing to do to achieve your big dream?
-Are you willing to work or study regularly to make your big dream come true?
-Are you willing to get in the habit of saving money to make your big dream come true?
-Would you be willing to wait and say no other things you may want?
-Would you be willing to set goals and map out a strategy to accomplish those goals to make your dream come true?
Step 3. Do an Activity
Have your child do an activity like an art or craft.
You might have them:
-Draw a picture or a poster about their dream
-Create and decorate their own personal dream bank and savings jar.
