In Her Own Words

I remember being in the first or second grade and being paid an allowance of 500 taka (Bangladeshi currency) per week, which was roughly equivalent to $10 back then. This was a lot of money! Especially, considering that none of my other friends (of the same age group) were receiving any allowance at all. Fixed allowances are not (or at least were not) common in Bangladesh, culturally speaking, especially for children that young.

I was the favorite amongst my peers, funnily enough because I had more money than the others. I used to spend all my money buying candy or cookies or gifts for me and my peers. I remember running after ice-cream trucks on a regular basis to try out new flavors every other day. I was able buy whatever from the local store whenever I pleased.

Teach kids money. Start by cultivating one money habit.

The most important money habit. Saving!

As you can imagine, I had no knowledge and/or awareness of budgeting at all! Who does at that age, right? I used to finish my allowance in a matter of three or four days with nothing to spend the rest of the week, and then would run to my parents for more. Occasionally, they would give in and spoil me with more money (perks of being an only child!). Now that I think of it, if I had known how to budget my money throughout the week, I could have enjoyed it for longer! But would I have preferred to enjoy a little less every day for the whole week or enjoy a lot without reservation for the first four days of week, I will never know.
