Seeking Independence, and Finding Insight
As the middle of five children, I developed my need for independence at a very young age. And I was well aware that having my own income was the way to make that happen.
So when I was 14, I got a job as a sales associate at Steinmart.
I was assigned to the housewares section, and quickly learned that I hated sheets. Specifically having to fold sheets, towels and other linens.
So after spending a year figuring out the origami that will get an enormous comforter back inside a plastic, cube-shaped, zipper bag, I came to the realization that retail was not for me.
That experience gave me a newfound awareness of my behavior as a consumer, and to this day, I consider it my personal mission to do no harm to the carefully arranged merchandising displays when I go shopping for new linens.

That job also gave me insight that I would carry into my career. You may not know if something is the right fit, but you'll always know when it's wrong.
After leaving that job, I found a position that better suited my aptitudes. I left Steinmart for a position with the daycare center at a local United Methodist Church. While the pay was nice (about $4 more per hour), it more importantly gave me firsthand experience seeing how many parents can struggle to balance earning a living to provide for their children with the need to spend time caring for them.
That ability to assist in supporting families and communities would become an undercurrent in the rest of my career.
