What did you use to save money in as a child?

We posted and posed this question on LinkedIn to promote Sammy Rabbit's Childhood Money Memories interview with LinkedIn Senior Financial Services Editor Devin Banerjee.

The question received a wonderful response. So, we decided to ask this question Sammy Rabbit newsletter subscribers as well. Here is what everyone had to share. We hope you enjoy the responses as much as we did!

AND, if you would like to be featured in Part 2 of the series, send us your saving story and response to the question - What did you use to save money in as a child?

"My parents bought me a gray cash box with a lock and key when I was probably 6 or 7. Sometimes they would give me the change from a gas station or store purchase when we were together and I’d add it to the box, which I kept under my bed. Every week, I opened the box to count the money, update my ledger (a sheet of printer paper), and organize the coins with roll wrappers. I kept money in that box for about a decade. Every now and then, the problem was finding the key!"

"Wow. That must be a durable box. What I remember about my saving money as a child is, I didn’t learn how to save money as a child. I remember having a piggy bank that was an actual pink pig bank. However we put money in and shake it to take money out. One day when the money didn’t come out fast enough, we cut the slit open wider to get the money out faster. Based on this experience is why I make it my mission to help the youth learn the importance of savings money and make it fun for them to learn. Trying to get them to understand their future self will thank them for it."

"I had wonderful parents who taught me the three envelope system. The envelopes were labeled, Give, Save, and Spend. The savings was then deposited at a local bank once per month and my ledger was updated. It was nice to see my savings earning interest (which isn't the case these days)."

Charles Bovaird, Financial Writer and Editor

"I saved money in a lock box I got for Boy Scout camp. I first attended Boy Scout camp when I was 10, and I think I got that lock box so I could keep important items (including money) in it.  I still have that lock box, and even now, I use it to hold a small amount of cash as an emergency fund."

I put my savings in a big old plastic drink jug. I didn't wait until it was full to "cash out"! The sad part is that I don't even remember what I bought. Make sure you're spending your savings on what is truly valuable to you!

Me and my siblings used clay banks (pottery), commonly found in the shape of colorful fruits (the local version of piggy banks). We used to eagerly wait for the big annual fair where these were sold in many different shapes and sizes, and replace the ones we had from a year ago. Precious memories!
