West Covina Noon Rotary Club

by Team Sammy

Sam X Renick, Ken Lund, Hilda Flores at the West Covina Noon Rotary Club.

West Covina Noon Rotary Club Rotarians love kids. We do to!

So, it was a pleasure to meet and share our thinking with them on youth financial literacy.

They meet weekly at noon, on Wednesdays, at the South Hills Country Club. It is a magnificent and inspiring site with a wonderful view of the golf course.

The current Club President is Drexel L. Smith. He will soon be replaced by incoming President Elect, Vicky Abbott.

The Rotary Club meeting brought to mind fond memories of our journey with Sammy Rabbit delivering financial education experiences throughout the world. The reason, our first book reading took place at Vine Elementary School in West Covina. Dr. Katy Merrill was the principal. She offered me invaluable advice I have never forgotten and share frequently. She advised me to remember kids are much smarter than adults generally give them credit for. She went on to say kids minds are like sponges and are capable of absorbing lots of information.

As a part of our commitment to spreading financial literacy we were pleased to give 25 copies of Sammy's Big Dream to the West Covina Noon Rotary Club to donate to a local elementary school classroom!

The three primary points our presentation emphasized were:

  1. Financial literacy or illiteracy starts early and in the home

  2. The benefits of children getting in the habit of saving money extend far beyond financial proficiency and wellness. They include learning to delay gratification, set goals, develop discipline, and build self-confidence.

  3. I was lucky to have parents, family members, friends, teachers, colleagues and community leaders continuously talk to me about great money habits as a child and all throughout my life. Many kids today are not that lucky. It starts with parents, but collectively, we all need to see that kids receive lots and lots of financial education experiences throughout their lives.
