Rethinking Generational Wealth

Generational wealth is often misunderstood. In movies, it’s usually portrayed as a massive inheritance—something so substantial it frees the next generation from ever needing to work. But that image doesn’t reflect the real experiences of most families. In reality, generational wealth isn’t defined by luxury—it’s defined by opportunity. It means being able to pay for college without debt, help with a down payment on a home, or provide financial support during a crisis. For many families, especially those from marginalized communities, those kinds of opportunities have historically been out of reach—not because of a lack of discipline, but because of systemic barriers and a lack of access to financial knowledge.

Why Financial Education Matters

That’s why financial education isn’t just important to me—it’s central to my purpose. At its core, wealth is about choice. It means being able to make decisions from a place of stability instead of survival. But those choices aren’t equally available to everyone. Women, Black communities, and other historically underserved groups have been systematically excluded from financial systems and denied the tools needed to build lasting security. Changing that starts with education. Empowering people with financial knowledge can shift outcomes for generations.

Choosing Finance to Break Cycles

I chose to study finance not just to better understand money for myself, but to help others break out of cycles of scarcity. Financial literacy isn’t just a personal skill—it’s a tool for transformation. It opens doors, expands possibilities, and gives people the power to build something meaningful and lasting. I want to be part of a future where more families go from just getting by to building real, lasting legacies.

Gratitude, Responsibility, and Paying It Forward

On a personal note, I was fortunate to receive an inheritance. That financial foundation gave me a kind of head start that many people never get. It has deeply shaped both my academic journey and my long-term goals. It also shaped my understanding of responsibility—not as something I’m owed, but as something I owe forward. I want to build on the legacy I was given—not just to maintain it, but to multiply its impact. For me, building wealth isn’t about status or self-interest. It’s an expression of gratitude, a commitment to serve others, and an investment in the belief that the next generation should always have more options than the last.
