Becoming Financially Literate Since Age 9

by Team Sammy

Guest Blogger Jacklin Wang

In this special guest blog, Sammy Rabbit is proud to showcase teen financial literacy education champion and founder of the Frisco High School chapter of the Young Investors Society, Jacklin Wang!

Jacklin is a junior at Frisco High School in Texas and shares the following:

"I'm Jacklin Wang, a Financial Education activist. In just six months, I've had the incredible opportunity to teach over 50 high school students essential personal finance principles. Now, I'm eager to extend this knowledge to elementary school students, believing it's never too early to start learning about money."

Harnessing the Magic of Compound Interest: A Lesson from Early Beginnings

My financial journey began at age 9, working as a paper shredder for my parents' small business. As I grumbled about the heat of the machine, I often wondered why I had to endure it. What I didn’t realize at the time was that my mother’s decision to employ me not only gave me a paycheck but also allowed her to set up a W-2 in my name and open a Roth IRA. That simple action planted the seed for a lifelong passion. Her vision of compounding interest took root, eventually growing into my mission to empower others financially.

Harnessing the Magic of Compound Interest: A Lesson from Early Beginnings

The idea of a kid retiring one day seems unimaginable, but starting my retirement account early and leaving the money untouched has already tripled its value. That is priceless.

This is the magic of compound interest—you put your money to work, and it keeps growing even while you sleep. Sadly, it's a concept many adults never fully grasp.

My Big Take Away

If there's one thing to remember, it's this: start investing early. No matter your age or stage in life, time is your most valuable asset—it's the one thing you can't buy back. As Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad (the first financial book I ever read), says, "Your future is created by what you do today, not tomorrow." And if you're a teenager like me, time is on your side—it's your superpower.
